This information is not available anywhere but here. It has been submitted to the Frogs several weeks ago. The Frogs website is still promoting a soft-tip event on Friday nights. This information was submitted to the WDA, but is not in any WDA publications or on their website. CORRECTION This is my error. I missed where Matt put it on the Kansas Dart Frogs web site.
The Legion is offering 7-week sessions of 8-player singles leagues in a 2 out of 3 format with a 100% payback. This is set up as a tournament format and is an excellent way to get used to a tournament format. This is a league darters have been asking for for years, but I don't have the phone numbers or e-mail addresses to inform the players who are looking for an event like this.
The Frogs are not promoting this to their members. The WDA is not promoting these events to their members. Correction The Frogs are promoting this.
There's a reason the address to this site includes "merlinrants" and I'm about to start one.
The Legion has had a great symbiotic relationship with the WDA. The Legion has been a huge asset for the WDA and has improved what the WDA could offer its members. The WDA has been a huge boost to the Legion and has improved what the Legion could offer its members.
Losing the Turkey Shoot is no biggie. That was a good revenue source for the Legion, but sharing the wealth has never been a problem with the Legion. Losing the WDA-sponsored Halloween Shoot falls in the same category.
Losing both in the same year is losing 2 revenue sources that generally helped the Legion recover from summertime slow business and A/C bills.
I am the Financial Officer of the Legion and it is my duty to report to the members on the state of the Legion's finances, the causes of any shortfalls, etc.
Those of us at Post 4 who understand the WDA and support darts understand that the WDA needs to move special events around between sponsors. The majority of members at Post 4 are not familiar with the WDA.
When Post 4 no longer had the space available to store the WDA's standards, Post 4 bought a semi trailer and parked it in their lot for the WDA.
I have to give a financial report to the members of Post 4 Wednesday, Oct. 10. I don't see any way to spin it that the Legion members won't raise questions about the Legion's future financial or facility involvement with the WDA.
Post 4 has become the WDA's host for qualifiers because it's the only facility with the available space.
The absolute lack of support for Post 4 events and the use of Post 4 by the WDA "when it's convenient" is not conducive to raising support of Post 4 members who vote on how Post 4 utilizes its resources.

The WDA has always enjoyed a great relationship with Post 4. Other than this column, no one has brought any concerns regarding this relationship. I hope that the WDA and Post 4 enjoy a long-standing relationship, as was evidenced by the WDA's committment to work out the Spring Fling inside of the constraints of the Post so that we could have the event there. The new leagues out of Post 4 have not yet committed that these are WDA events. One league has committed 50% but that was stated as temporary at our last Board of Director's meetings. If these new leagues are to be incorporated into WDA leagues, then the WDA will promote them and support them to the extent possible. Unequivocal support for the American Legion Post 4 is WDA Policy and we look forward to that remaining in place.

The Legion certainly appreciates the support the WDA has provided through the years the Legion and the WDA have been associated.
I disagree with the comment that the WDA went out of its way to accommodate the Legion regarding the Spring Fling.
The Legion offered to move the Spring Fling into the "Members" area. The Legion had the same number of boards and capabilities of more seating and table space than the Laid Back, which had successfully hosted the Spring Fling for many years.
The WDA membership voted to award the Legion both the Spring Fling and the August General Membership meeting. That would have been 2 days of significant revenue for the Legion. Combining those events gave the Legion 1 day of significant revenue instead of 2.
What I stated at the last Captain's Meeting was that if the WDA did nothing to promote or provide darters for the Saturday league and if I had to do all the promotion, publicity and recruitment of players, then I saw no reason to continue the requirement that league members pay the WDA.
The WDA has historically promoted and supported many non-WDA events that WDA sponsors have offered.

One possiblitly could be that no one wants to play in the above mentioned new weekend leagues.
I for one have been a league player with the WDA for 4 years. I chose to play at side pockets on Saturday for a few reasons
1. No political posturing, before, during, or after I throw each dart. It's amazing how much fun can be without having to hear the latest backstab, or complaint about who is doing what in the WDA.
2. I love the legion, I have grown up there. I will never bad mouth it. I will continue to support it as I see fit, not how someone else tells me I should.
3. A juke box with a selection of music that fits more than one demographic.
4. Electronic boards. How can I socialize, enjoy my drink, sit with friends or even eat a meal when I am chalking any event I am not playing in. 3 bucks a night is a small price to pay to be able to enjoy the time that I have when not at the board playing.
5. Promoting darts and good will. I played at Side pockets Saturday night along with 87 other people. There were by my drunken count around 20 "soft tip" players there all enjoying steel tip darts.
I was there for 7 hours, yes 7 and during that time I did not have to hear one negative word about the game that I have grown to love, nor did I hear one negative word about anyone else there that was playing.
I bring this up because in the 3 hours a week that I spend playing in WDA sponsored events I get to hear who isnt doing thier job, who isnt appreciated, who needs to go, who needs to stay, who needs to pay for what. blah blah blah.
I suggest that you embrace what the Frogs are doing with darts instead of try and rain on the parade. They had 88 people show up to have fun, have a couple of drinks, and play the game of darts without any B.S.
It isnt the "legion" that people are not supporting. Its the amount of crap that goes with playing at the legion that keeps people away.

Just like what would happen at a captains meeting, this has turned into a bickering match back and forth. Gotta love the dysfunctional dart family. Now for my two cents.
If I remember right, isnt the WDA's mission to promote steel tip darts in Wichita. Isn't the legion and the singles league held there in Wichita? Ive been playing in the singles league and have watched half of it go to the WDA, but no mention at all of it on the WDA site, or in the newsletter. By giving 50% of weekly fees, that should get some kind of promotion. But no, nothing. Merlin is right, if he has to take the time to recruit and do everything else, then the WDA shouldnt get anything.
Its understandable that the frogs wouldnt post anything about the league, they are protecting their own interest. I mean 4 or 5 people playing in a Friday or Saturday night singles league would just kill their attendance of what 30 people who go out there.
I will stand behind the Legion, after all they have done for the WDA, to not have a league out of there promoted by the WDA, or the lack of WDA members showing up there is just an insult.
I thought it was the job of the executive council to do everything they can to promote ALL steel tip darts in Wichita. I guess theres fine print, maybe they should have stated it as "promoting steel tip darts in Wichita....only if it fits our hidden agenda"
Come on people, support the legion, get involved in a sponsor that has done alot for our association. They deserve that respect from us. Otherwise someday we may be sitting at a captains meeting deciding how many bars we can split qualifiers and events between to have enough space.

I have been in charge of the Dart Frogs's web site for going on a year now. And dang it.. what I am reading about the criticism of what we promote is senseless and to be honest... a little over the top... even for me. I know I have not been involved in the sport of darts for long at all.. In fact its really been just a little over a year. But reading this article and especially some of the comments makes me angry and to be quite honest.. sad.
The thing that compelled me to write this is that some of what I am reading is just downright untrue.
Merlin, you sent me an e-mail with all of the information for this Friday "Early Bird Air Cap Warmup" League. I posted it (where is still continues to be available) on our Local Events page. This information was posted THE SAME DAY YOU SENT THE INFO as well as a mention on the FRONT PAGE of our website for over a week! In fact.. the local events page received nearly 400 different hits since that info was posted. So to see talk that the frogs don't promote anything at the Legion is rediculous to say the least. And to be quite honest, anyone that thinks the frogs don't care what happens at the Legion is wrong.
I am sure I can speak for every one of the frogs when I say our single goal is to promote darts. Plain and simple. What we do at Sidepockets, Regional Tournaments, On the Internet, etc.. to gain new players will filter down to the WDA and the Legion multiple times over. We don't ask anything in return, we don't make a penny, we all donate our time and our love of the game so that others can enjoy it as well. To see most everyone here arguing over a "weekend" is childish. If you all can't look past a "weekend" and look at the "image" you are giving darts by bickering.. than you have already lost in your efforts to promote anything.
I am sorry for any feathers I have ruffled by saying this. It takes a lot to get me going.. but when I personally put the info on our site and give it front page billing and then learn that it is somehow our fault???? Seriously.... Are you going to blame the frogs for people not showing up??

Am I in the right place? This is where we saddle up the Drama Llamas right? I would like to present a pin or better yet a very large trophy ( I would be willing to pay for the trophy but I have to use those quarters to have fun playing darts, or pay for beer or cigarettes or whatever you choose to drink or smoke) for the person(s) who can conjure up the most drama in a season. It would have a nice gold plated llama standing proudly atop the trophy, no…..better yet one llama whispering into another’s ear, yeah that’s it.
I don’t come here for information, rather a good chuckle or two. It’s somewhat reminiscent of middle school banter. I visit the Frog site for information concerning darts, like the information I found under “Local Events” listing some kind of league hosted by the American Legion Post 4 on Friday and Saturday nights (it’s been there for awhile). I also frequent another site for information as well, some may be familiar with it, www.wdanews.com. Although most of the information on that site is also reiterated on the Frog site. But, one thing that caught my eye was a somewhat vague statement on their home page….see if you can figure it out. “Promoting the sport of darts in the Wichita area”. Does this mean “Steel-Tip” darts, “Soft-Tip” darts, or perhaps it means all darts? Maybe it even includes Yard Darts?, no……I think those were banned in all 51 states (or are there 50?). Maybe if the states were “electronically” counted we wouldn’t have to worry whether it’s 51 or 50. I will have to write a letter to my congressman to see if we can do that, but he might want a quarter to do a practice run and I’m not sure I like that idea.
I think it’s great that the Frogs are, “still promoting a Soft-tip event on Friday nights”. After all I think they still use darts at said event. I feel that every darting event in Wichita should be promoted on every website that [promotes the sport of darts in the Wichita area]. That way, darters would have the choice to play wherever and whenever they wanted.
$52.50 for a lifetime of Drama? I’m in. Only because I’m not sure how long Jerry Springer will run. All the drama and the people creating it will be instrumental to the destruction of the sport of darts in Wichita and eventually the WDA as a whole. Let’s band together, keep our mouths shut when the only reason for opening it is too create controversy and drama, and throw solid darts at establishments that we feel comfortable with and have fun doing it.
If I had a Drama Llama I would saddle up and ride off into the sunset at this point, but I don’t. So I will borrow one (they are plentiful, I found one downtown, they breed like mice). HIYOO DRAMA LLAMA, AWAY!!!!!

October Captains Meeting Highlights
Halloween Party at SidePockets October 20. 300% payback blind draw. Both SidePockets and the WDA are matching the entry fees. Free dinner for all WDA members. Cash awards for best costumes and best costume playing in the blind draw. 6 PM for food. Signups at 7:30. Darts start at 8.
I'm thinking I could wear pleated pants, dress shoes and make a USA National Team shirt. I could go disguised as a darter and probably sweep the costume events.
Turkey Shoot November 2 at Mary's. Free food. Free blind draws. One handicapped and one scratch. Dillon's gift certificates for top 4 in both blind draws. Signups at Noon. Darts at 1. It's only $5 per person for a full Thanksgiving dinner for non-WDA members. This is a great opportunity to bring out your family and let them get to know the people we play with every week.
Captain Kenny's spaceship design will be the Air Cap Shirt this year.
Lifetime Memberships will be offered at a reduced price of $60 at the Halloween Bash and the Turkey Shoot. Annual members who have paid this year's dues can buy a Lifetime Membership for $52.50 from October 20 through November 3.
Two additional pin awards were approved. A "Red Bull" is any out ending with a double bull. A "Lizzard Out" pin will be awarded to anyone ending a game with a double 1.
Lifetime memberships were awarded to Rotten and Juanita for their contributions to darts over the last 20 years. Tommy, the bartender at the Air Cap, will get a plaque and a lifetime membership in recognition for his contributions to the Air Cap over the last 9 years.
A proposal to change the Monday format to eliminate 301, add singles Cricket and a 4-person Burma Road event was tabled. Rich Pike will put the proposal and rules in writing. This proposal is likely to go to the next General Membership meeting.

Post 4 Hosting Several Events
Friday Night - Singles League with 8 players - 100% payback for a 7-week session. Starts October 19. $35 entry fee for the entire session. Scratch league. Start time 7 PM.
Saturday Night - Singles League with 8 players - at least 50% payback for a 7-week session. Starts October 27. $35 entry fee for the entire session. Handicap league. Start time 7:30.
Both leagues are a "tournament" format using brackets. 1st through 8th are played out. Instead of randomly determining first-round opponents, a chart is used to make sure every person in the league has a first round match against every other person in the league. All matches are 2 out of 3.
501 and Cricket are played on alternating weeks. The league starts and ends on 501. There are 4 weeks where all matches are 501 and 3 weeks where all matches are Cricket.
I expect the Friday league will be able to play a doubles bracket in addition to singles. In doubles, your first-round opponent in singles becomes your doubles partner that night. The handicap format starts at higher points and the matches take too long to include doubles.
Everyone plays 2 out of 3 against 3 different opponents each night. The open league plays 2 out of 3 against 2 different doubles opponents each night.
Payouts are 50% for 1st, 30% for 2nd, and 20% for 3rd. Placings are based on points earned each night. In singles, it's 8 points for 1st, 7 for 2nd, etc. In doubles, it's 4 points (each) for 1st, 3 points (each) for 2nd, etc. The 3 people who get the most points during the league get the money at the end of the league.
This is your chance to get used to a 2 out of 3 format in plenty of time for the Air Cap. The league is set up so that every night is a mini-tournament.
For serious players, every round you win means you're against another winner in the next round. It provides a decent simulation of the pressures that can happen in a larger tournament.
For more casual players, it's a lot of darts, experience, fun and practice for the $5 nightly entry fee.

Just 2 weeks left in the Saturday League
There is a bit of separation in the standings with one week of Cricket and one week of 501 remaining, but the battle for 3rd place is really heating up.
David Garrett listed a Ton as an accomplishment - not 101 - not 121, but 100 points. I asked David if he actually considered that an accomplishment and he said he did. Okay.
I was going to talk a little trash on David for considering 100 points to be an accomplishment, but I realized that talking trash with David would be like talking psychology with Kraig.

Saturday Night League Update
You pretty much need a razor blade to separate the leaders. After the first Cricket Week, the Top points went like this: 12,11,10,9,9.
After the second 501 week it didn't change much.
Here are the current standings and ppd's for the league

We've had a couple of people join us either as replacement players or substitutes.
Nick Mastroni has a 13.75 ppd. Jimmy Dinsmore is at 9.38. Moe Inc has a 8.59 average.
The doubles part has been dropped in handicap. Handicap games are generally longer than open matches. Someone is usually starting quite a bit higher than 501. Playing the doubles matches just ran too late.
All standings have been adjusted to eliminate doubles play.

September 1 is Lizzard Palooza. There are no darts scheduled at Post 4 that night. Next session for the Saturday Tourney League is September 8.

"Over-50" league cranking up
The "over 50" league has scheduled a get-together for September 5 and a "league formation" meeting/practice night for September 19.
Randy hasn't OK'd this, but I get the feeling that close counts in this league like it counts in horseshoes, hand grenades or nuclear warfare.
Nick Mastroni has a local job with a trucking company and will be available some nights. He's trying to work it out so he can play some darts. Nick isn't technically old enough to join the "over 50" league, but I'm willing to donate enough of my years to make him eligible.
There's no way to know how this is going to work out unless you attend the September 19 meeting. I've still got a couple of years to donate after I give Nick some of mine. Be there if you're close.

My 2 most memorable Cricket matches
Pat Byrnes was a good friend of mine and had been the WDA Tournament Director for several years. Sadly, Pat passed away. The next Air Cap was $11,000 in the basement of a hotel on E. Kellogg. There was a "Pat Byrnes Memorial" Cricket blind draw. One round out of the money the match went to 3 legs. We were just behind and both sides were down to 16's when my opponent hit a 7-count. T16, T15, SB. Ouch. We lost. After the match, the guy who hit the fatal 7-count introduced himself: "Great games. My name is Jesse, Jesse Layton".

Chat with Bubba and Missy after Nationals
I have got to say this is why we send Youth darters and their parents to Nationals. Everything I've heard from Bubba and Missy just says over and over - experience, enjoyment, motivation.
Missy didn't win as many games as she was hoping for, but she is convinced and dedicated to working on her game and doing better next year. Bubba is convinced Missy can do it and is planning his budget, vacations and pretty much his entire free time around getting Missy into more tournaments and getting her more familiar with the formats and pressure of National competition.

Condolences to Jeff Prince
I thought Jeff was running late - or maybe at the wrong locatioon, so I called Jeff.
The conversation went like this: "Jeff, are you planning on joining us tonight"? "I can't, I have to make the funeral arrangements for my brother. I tried to call you, but you had already left".
Jeff's brother had been hospitalized with probably terminal illness for several weeks. The end arrived. There hadn't been much hope, but hope springs eternal. Any hope ended on the last Monday night for the Mind Freaks.
There are a lot of thngs more important than darts. Sometimes we need to stop and think about how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy our pasttime.
I give my most sincere condolences, thoughts, respect, sympathy and honor to Jeff. Jeff has been struggling with this situation for several weeks. The struggle is over, but not in a way anyone wanted to see it end.

I had a chance to talk to Bubba. David talked to Missy for quite a while. This all happended Saturday, 8-11.

2 out of 3 strategies
2 out of 3 is a lot different than single games. There's a mental thing that can happen after the first game. This should be avoided.
Sometimes the winner of the first match gets overconfident. This can be fatal. Winning the first and losing the second can change everything. The momentum swings and quite often the player winning the second match builds the confidence to think they can win, while the winner of the first match loses that confidence.
Sometimes the loser of the first game loses confidence and pretty much expects to get beat in the second game. This is fatal. If you expect to get beat, you're probably (more like certainly) going to get beat.
Every game is a new game. 2 out of 3 is the best exercise for focusing on your darts and the dart board.
If you win the first leg, promise yourself you can and will do better in the second leg. Maintain focus and concentration. Don't let a lead lull you into throwing poorly and thinking you can get away with it.
If you lose the first leg, have the focus, concentration and fortitude to know you will do better in the second leg. I have seen many matches where the first leg was a massacre and the next 2 legs went the other way.
For better players, it's your darts - not your skills - that win games. Lesser players are aiming for you. If you even slightly overlook them, they will come after you and sometimes beat you.
For lesser players, go after the big players. Take it to them. If you give up, you never win. Make the better player beat you. Don't beat yourself by thinking you're going to lose. If you get beat in the first leg, give your opponent a chance to mess up and think you're easy - then take it to them.
Most important, if you ever get matched up against an old gray-haired guy, those guys are always easy to beat. Don't worry. Just toss your darts at the board and let them hit wherever they land. You'll still get the win.

Saturday handicapped "Tournament League" is filled

From a business point of view, if another handicap league forms and they'd prefer Fridays and if there isn't a solid indication a scratch league is forming, both the Legion and the WDA benefit from starting whatever league can be formed.
If Friday should happen to switch to a handicap league there is still Mary's and SidePockets. I expect both locations would welcome a league.

New dart leagues forming
Sunday, August 5, the WDA announced the formation of a new league. It's 8 people (sign up as indivisuals), 4 dart boards, and a lot of darts every night in a 2 out of 3 tournament format.
The Saturday handicap session was filled Sunday at the dart meeting. I am taking signups for a Tuesday handicap session at Legion Post 4. I am also taking signups for a scratch session (no handicaps) on Fridays at Legion Post 4.
It's a tournament bracket every night. First through eighth is played out. Every match is 2 out of 3 games. That gives everyone 6 to 9 singles games per night.
After singles, each person has a different doubles partner each night. In the 7-week league session, each person will play doubles with every other person in the league. Doubles are bracketed and first through fourth is played. That gives everyone 4 - 6 doubles games every night.
The games played each week rotate between 501 (first night) and Cricket (second night). That makes 4 weeks of 501 and 3 weeks of Cricket in the league.
A Wichita Darting Association membership is required. League fees are $5 per night. 50% of the league fees are paid out to the league winners. 1st - $70, 2nd - $42, 3rd - $28. Winners are determined by the weekly placing in the events. 1st in Singles is 8 points, 2nd - 7 points, etc. 1st in Doubles is 4 points (per person), 2nd - 3, etc.
This is the easiest WDA league to join. Just e-mail me at msuderman@gmail.com. It's singles, so you don't need a team. Any 8 players can form a l;eague without sgining up or anything. Just let the WDA know you're playing the league and contact me (for now) for the paperwork. Then find an available location with 4 dart boards and throw some darts.

There are darters in Wichita who are looking for experience in this format to get past the first round at the Air Cap. Others are looking to get into the money. Others are looking at winning events. There has been interest in this league at all those levels. Getting used to a bracketed 2 out of 3 format and playing that format should help darters at every level in Wichita move up in the standings at the Air Cap.

General Membership Meeting/Spring Fling Recap
Sunday, August 5, started with a great meeting followed by some great food. Then a couple of blind draws with some surprises in the results. By the end of the day the Fire Department visited the Legion and a 911 call from the Legion resulted in at least 6 police cars responding.
I don't know that I've ever seen so much accomplished in 1 hour and 10 minutes, which was the length of the meeting including handing out trophies and awards. 9 rules changes were approved. David Garrett was elected Vice-President, Jennifer (I think the last name is Holly, but I forgot to write it down - my apologies) was elected Public Relations person.
All teams will share payments on electronically scored boards.
"Run and grab it" appears to be a violation of ADO rules, which are vague on the subject. The WDA decided that chalkers and team Captains should use common sense. If a dart is wobbling, the thrower can touch it so the chalker can determine its location. That appears to comply with ADO rules and has been observed at the highest levels of ADO competition. Touching a thrown dart ends the darters throw.
The Bylaw voted several years ago about a mandatory suspension for throwing a dart at anything but the dart board was lost due to a series of mishaps including a computer crash where the Bylaws were stored. Jim Fleetwood and Merlin believe they can find that Bylaw and will have it reinstated into the Bylaws.
That already looks like a lot for the length of the meedting, but the WDA also approved a new league. The handicap version of the new league is filled and scheduled to start August 18.
I spaced out an item I intended to bring up in New Business that would have extended the meeting to 1 hour 10 minutes and 5 seconds. That was to award Juanita a life-time membership in the WDA. If there's anyone who deserves a "lifetime achievement" award it's Juanita. Let's do this at the August meeting.

Lisa, who's an occasional league player for several years teamed with Kraig and won the seeded blind draw. Dawn and Lisa made some major noise in the unseeded blind draw. It's great to see new and former players show up, have a good time and spank some of the old-timers.
There was some food left over, so I went across the street to the Fire Station. The Captain of the station and 2 firefighters came to the Legion and pretty much took everything that was left. The 3 of them had their hands full when they left. Our excess food was donated to the firefighters across the street.
Around 10:30, a pickup was seen backing up to a door at a business at Main and Murdock. Then there was a rope tied to the pickup and to the door. Then the pickup took off under heavy acceleration. Then 2 guys got out and attempted to get past what was left of the door. That prompted the 911 call.
Cops showed up in absolute stealth mode. 4 cops around the pickup. 1 car in the alley behind the Legion with no lights. Couldn't see the vehicles that had the 4 cops rushing the pickup. Then 6 cars showed up in the alley.
Here's what we were told. The guy in the pickup owned the building. His tenant hadn't paid rent for 3 months, but his tenant had put up a steel barricade in front of the door. The building owner showed up when he thought no one would notice and attempted to yank the steel barricade from the door so he could change the locks and kick his tenant out.
It was pretty much a "never a dull moment" event from noon to 11 PM.

Additional info on "home team provides the quarters"
This is from the WDA Rules Of Play. This provision has been there since at least 2004, which is the last time the rules were updated. I suspect it's been there as long as I've played darts.
ARTICLE 6 - "The Scorekeeper"
Section 1 - During Association competition, the Home Team shall be responsible for furnishing scorekeepers.
Section 2 - The score keeper shall be a dart player familiar with Association rules. The scorekeeper shall be mutually acceptable to both Team Captains.
If visiting teams are required to pay for scorekeeping, something is going to have to be changed in both of these sections.

Side Dishes August 5
The last couple of Burn Your Buns at the Laid Back had only a few side dishes. The Laid Back is one of the fondest memories in the history of the WDA, but it's a memory now. Out of respect for Juanita and the Laid Back, the Legion would like to name their event the "Post 4 Pig-Out".
Thanks to Larry Crowl for coming up with that name.
Burn Your Buns has been used for the event following the meeting so that people understand what's happening. Side dishes are needed.
Chips and dip, baked beans, coleslaw, pasta dishes, veggie trays, potato salad, chili for chili dogs and chili cheeseburgers - these are just a few ideas.
Side dishes is the only way to keep these events alive. Please help out by bringing something to accompany the burgers and dogs.

League Leader Updates No Longer Available
A change in the way the WDA website is done makes it nearly impossible to post league leaders or any other info about individual performances in leagues.
I apologize for this. I will save the info from the final results for Thursday and the current results for Monday, but I'm going to have to do some techie stuff before I can post "League Leader" updates.
I don't know why the format for posting PPD's on the WDA site was changed. The only thing most darters will notice is that nothing lines up in nice columns any more. That's no biggie, but that change killed the process I was using to update "League Leaders".

Updates and corrections
Wally's will not be sponsoring dart teams. The Detour, formerly The Laid Back, wll be sponsoring teams.
I'd love to leave Wally's last-minute change of heart at that, but "Enquiring minds wnat to know" - so here goes.
The team that was going to play out of Wally's showed up to check out their new home. Neither the club manager nor the potential dart team was happy with that visit.
I've laid some crap on Debby for p***ing off the potential new sponsor, but further investigation indicates the manager at Wally's had Debby confused with another customer who was ripping the club manager a new one for the slow service.
My bottom line is I don't think the manager at Wally's wanted a bunch of people she didn't know in her bar. I've always felt that if someone doesn't want you at their bar - don't go to their bar.

The team that was going to play out of Wally's showed up to check out their new home. Neither the club manager nor the potential dart team was happy with that visit.
I've laid some crap on Debby for p***ing off the potential new sponsor, but further investigation indicates the manager at Wally's had Debby confused with another customer who was ripping the club manager a new one for the slow service.
My bottom line is I don't think the manager at Wally's wanted a bunch of people she didn't know in her bar. I've always felt that if someone doesn't want you at their bar - don't go to their bar.

Rules changes for discussion
The "run and grab it" rule. The WDA has allowed a player to run to the board and grab a dart that was about to fall. ADO rules require that the third or final dart must remain embedded in the board for 5 seconds. The ADO rule isn't totally clear, but refer to #34 nd #35 at this page of the ADO Tournament Rules: http://www.adodarts.com/pdffiles/TournamentRulesBooklet.pdf
It seems that the chalker's decision cannot be final until the third or final dart has remained in the board for 5 seconds and that the thrower isn't allowed to touch his darts until the chalker's decision is final.

July Captain's Meeting Highlights
Finances are better than anyone expected. In addition to the WDA having more money than anyone was expecting, the various fundraisers raised over $2,000 to send Youth Darters to the Nationals.
The Cricket Qualifier is set for September 23 at the Legion for both the Ladies and the Men.
Thursday Leagues are cranking up July 26. Signup deadline is July 20. Contact Ron at radiel@cox.net or 208-4046.
The postponed Spring Fling has been rescheduled. It is set for August 5. The day starts with a General Membership meeting. New sponsor confirmed
I've visited 3 establishments interested in sponsoring dart teams. One had a problem with their lease. One had the darters between the bar and the restrooms. For those of you familiar with the Shamrock, you understand about bar customers walking through the throwing area to get to the restrooms.
Wally Brown's at 31st S. and Oliver (formerly Charlie's) offered a basically private room that seats 40 people. Enough room to comfortably put up 4 dart boards, kitchen, under 21 welcome and a clean and well-maintained facility.
The Outlaws are moving to Wally's because most of them live in Derby.
Wally's is starting with 2 dart boards. The WDA is contributing one. Wally has one. It's old and no longer brightly colored, but it's never had a dart thrown into it. He still has it from when he sponsored dart teams 12 - 15 years ago. The WDA contributed 2 backboards and scoreboards that used to be in the Legion Hall.
Wally's will not be doing team drinks. Instead of team drinks they are offering 2-for-1 draws and well drinks all night on Thursdays. Draws are $1.50 for 2, so that's a much better deal than team drinks.
I propose a "Welcome to the WDA" party at Charlie's on a Friday night some time in August. I will check their schedule to find a Friday they don't have bands. It will take at least 20 darters and a couple of standards to make this a success.

My resignation
I think most readers are aware I offered my resignation as VP.
When I ran for VP I wanted one year to work on Rules and Bylaws. I wanted the opportunity to get rid of the obscure stuff that could be brought up that tended to disrupt meetings. I wanted to get rid of the stuff that said one thing in one place and something else in another place.
For the most part, that's been accomplished. Getting the Rules of Play to not contradict the Bylaws was easier than I thought it would be.
I am confident the proposed rules changes will achieve the reason I ran for the office. There will always be stuff coming up that no one anticipated. No Bylaws or Rules will ever be complete or all-inclusive.
I had a great committee to work with. Rick Lowery and Steve Terronez gave me insight and viewpoints I couldn't possibly have had on my own. We've gone through our recollections of meetings and Directors decisions and we think we have all (or most) of them that were not recorded in Bylaws or Rules brought back to the Directors.
It took less than 6 months to achieve the goals I had when I ran for the office. The WDA needs more people with experience serving on the Council. It is for those reasons that I offered my resignation as VP.

WDA finances
It seems the WDA has been on a record-setting course of spending money lately. There was no Directors meeting in June. The lack of a June financial report and the amount of money the WDA is pouring into darting right now raised some questions with some members. Several asked me to review the financial records of the WDA.
I wasn't expecting any problems, but when I looked at the financial records - I was shocked. Shocked, shocked, shocked I tell you. Not at the dismal state of the WDA's finances but at the great state of the WDA's finances and the tremendous efforts some people have made.
After paying the entry fees for 2 Youths to go to the National Youth Playoffs and after adding $1,000 to the blind draws at a Regional Qualifier that sent Dan Zimmerman and Leanna Clifford to national-level competition, the WDA's finances are healthy.
The bank balance is about what we're used to seeing on monthly financial reports.
Dan and Christy Zimmerman must be recognized for their outstanding efforts at raising money for the Youth Leagues. It's mainly their efforts that raised about $1,500 for the Youth. A significant amount of that came from outside the WDA. The darters in Wichita will support the goals of the WDA, but at some point our pockets get a little thin. Money from outside the WDA is critical. Dan and Christy did one of the best jobs ever seen in this organization of working hard to achieve the goals of the WDA.
Due to those efforts the Youth Fund has enough money to pay the travel costs of sending our Youth Darters to the Nationals without taking it out of the WDA Treasury.
The Frog Leagues have made a generous contribution to the WDA.
The only expenses we have coming up between now and the Air Cap are the Turkey Shoot, the postponed Spring Fling, and probably a qualifier or 2. Those aren't major expenditures and League fees look to be in great shape. I project a very comfortable balance in the bank after the Air Cap.

Pardon me for being a little slow with this update. PPD updates at this stage of the season are pretty meaningless because ppd's pretty much stop moving around this time of the season. There was a period when Thursday night ppd's were updated once in the 3 weeks. That doesn't affect league play, but it makes it a bit pointless to update the League Leaders.

Good news and bad news
Good news: The Regional held at the Legion had an outstanding turnout. Dan Zimmerman and Leanna Clifford qualified to go to a National shootout for a chance to play on a team representing the USA.
Bad news: The $1,000 added by the WDA for the blind draws was never brought to the Members or the Directors for a vote and that is creating some controversy.
Good news: The Legion produced an excellent menu of meals, snacks and "bar food" to serve at the Regional Playoffs. The Legion brought in a chef experienced with service to the expected crowd.
Bad news: The darters evidently weren't very hungry. Total food sales didn't cover the cost of the food the Legion bought for the Regional.
Good news: The Youth Fundraiser at Sedgwick County Park is expected to have a great turnout and raise money to help send 2 Youths to the National Youth Championship.
Bad news: The cancellation of the Spring Fling and the announcement of the Youth BBQ fundraiser were approximately simultaneous. The cancellation of the Spring Fling was attributed to a question of "fiscal responsibility". Was it impossible to hold both events? The cost to the WDA for Spring Fling is about $80. I can't imagine that an $80 expenditure raises a question of "fiscal responsibility".
Unfortunately, the good news is running short, but there's still some bad news coming.
A financial report hasn't been seen since the March report. There have been several requests by different members to review the WDA's financial records. There has been no response to those requests. I am one of the members requesting to review the WDA's financial records. I have informed both Kraig and Ron and given them both a second request after getting no response to my first request.
I have received requests from several members to review the WDA's financial records. These requests have ranged from "I want to see where we're at" to "I demand to see what's going on and if there's any question I'm hiring a CPA and I'm going to make sure the WDA pays for it".
When I reported that to Kraig, his response was that I should stop making up imaginary people to further my own agenda. My wife is not an "imaginary person". She's the one demanding an audit. Those who have known me and Robby more than a few days have probably figured out that she's her own person, I don't pull her strings like a puppet, she's an independent thinker and I'm the last person who could influence her to "further my agenda".
I am confident there's nothing "funny" going on with the WDA's finances. I'm confident the WDA is on sound fiscal footing. I am confident that a review of the WDA's financial records will dispell the financial questions among the membership. I am confident a review of the WDA's finances will reveal there was no question of "fiscal responsibility" for cancelling the Spring Fling. Unfortunately, that will bring up the question, "Why was the Spring Fling cancelled"?

Regional Qualifier
The WDA membership came out and supported the Regional. 40 people entered the Blind Draw Friday and 46 entered Saturday. That raised $172 for the Youth program. There were 18 people in the "die hard" late blind draw Saturday night.
Another plus that came out of the Regional is there's a strong possibility a new league team was formed from new players during the Regional.
The only downside to the Regional was that only 3 players outside of Wichita showed up to qualify for the National playoffs. The WDA spent $2,200 to host the event. $1,100 for ADO entries, $1,000 for money-added blind draws and $100 to the Legion to help pay for the cost of opening the dart hall for 2 days.
As this was a BYOB event, the participants had substantially lower expenses even compared to the Legion's lowest in town drink prices. Perhaps if there are future BYOB events (Spring Fling), the WDA could charge a $1 or $2 admission and donate that to the Legion to help pay for utilities and air conditioning.

May Captain's Meeting Recap
No Captain's meeting in June. Next Captain's Meeting is July 3 at Post 256. That's minor compared to the rest of the meeting, but if anyone stops reading before they finish the good stuff, this is something that needs to be known.
14 players entered the Youth Qualifier and 2 will advance to the National Playoffs. Congratulations to Zach and Mz Thang.
There was discussion of the finances required to send 2 Youths and 2 parents to the Nationals. It's expensive and the WDA doesn't have unlimited resources. After a brief discussion it was unanimous that the WDA will continue to send 2 Youths to Nationals. A very positive and convincing attitude of "we will find a way" was the main topic of the discussion. There was a question whether this vote was setting a precedent that future administrations and Directors would feel compelled to follow. The Directors were overwhelmingly in favor of setting this vote as a precedent for the future of the WDA.
The WDA is still distributing the "yellow cards" where members fill out their contact information and anything they'd be interested in doing to help the WDA achieve its goals. Please take the time to fill one out - even if you are unable or choose to not volunteer. Please.
Speaking of volunteers. The WDA is hosting a Regional qualifier May 19 at Post 4. Chalkers are always needed at these events. One thing that keeps chalkers away from these events is the fear that if they show up, they'll be standing and chalking for 3 or 4 hours straight. Not this time. Chalkers are being asked to sign up for chalking duty in 1/2-hour increments. The hope is that this will make chalking more attractive to more potential chalkers. With enough chalkers, each chalker scores a couple of matches and then takes a break for a couple of matches. With plenty of available chalkers, there will be plenty of people to hang out with, relax with, talk to, and maybe shoot the breeze while enjoying a beverage. During these breaks, no discussions of removing the Vice-President will be allowed. This will be enforced by - dang, I forgot to get any volunteers for that.
Blind draws at the Regional qualifier are set for Friday,May 18 and Saturday, May 19. These are 80% payback with 20% going to the Youth Nationals fund. The blind draws will start at 8 PM. Signups will close in time to start the events on time, so don't be late. I know we're supposed to say Blind Draws start at 7:30 to get people there by 8.
Spring Fling is now cast in stone, chiseled in concrete and cemented in ink - or something like that. It's June 9 at Post 4. It's a Post 4 Pig Out, which is about exactly like a Burn Your Buns. Side dishes. Side dishes. Side dishes. Those are required to make these things work. Side dish contributions have been low at recent Burn Your Buns. We need a better response to keep these things going.
The Directors voted to suthorize a 3-year contract with the Radisson/Broadview - you know the place. The rental rate for the dart hall is guaranteed. Room rate increases have been capped at good rates.
The Directors also voted to stash money (to guarantee the Air Cap) in interest-bearing accounts. These will be timed to have the funds available in time to buy boards and guarantee payouts for the Air Cap.

April Captain's Meeting Highlights
6 men and 4 women will be qualified for the regionals to be played in Wichita in May. The qualifying playoff will be at American Legion Post #4 on April 7.
The Spring Fling is set for April 28 at Legion Post #4. Signups at 2 and the first event kicks off at 3. The "traditional format" will be followed with a seeded blind draw followed by an open blind draw. After that, ladies' and mens' singles events will be held - if there are enough people who want to play those events. If you want the opportunity to play in some open singles events and test your skills against people who may not play in your leagues, this is your chance. The singles events will be totally dependent on the number of people who want the events.
The WDA is looking at ways to send 2 youth players to the Nationals. Some great ideas for sponsorships and some great fund-raising ideas were presented. Blind draws on Fridays at Kelly's will be 80% payback with 20% going to the Youth Fund. The Lizzards and David Garrett's team each pledged $100 to the Youth Fund. There will be 2 blind draws with the May Regional Qualifier. Both will be 80% payback with 20% going to the Youth Fund.
There are efforts being made for 2 media campaigns to promote Youth Darting. These wouldn't cost the WDA anything. I'd rather not comment on them. Free media campaigns are always subject to last-minute decisions by the people at the media outlet. Nothing is guaranteed right now, but there are people working on it and and good results seems likely.
Many significant issues facing the WDA were brought to the Board. Discussions tended to be lively and the focus was constantly on what's best for the Association.
My personal highlight of the evening was the round of applause after I made my report. My report was: "I have nothing". I have never before been appreciated so wholeheartedly for 3 words. It was like that was totally unexpected and had never happened before.

Spring Leagues Off To A Great Start
Both the Monday and Thursday leagues are off to a great start.
Thursday had some great darts. I don't have information from all the matches, but in the match between Wonders and Outlaws, Gaty Boisen had a ton-eighty, Jeff Prince and John Messick had hat tricks at the Legion. Checking in from Kelly's in the match between The Rats and Lizzards, Dave Rosendale also had a ton-eighty.

Thursday had some great darts. I don't have information from all the matches, but in the match between Wonders and Outlaws, Gaty Boisen had a ton-eighty, Jeff Prince and John Messick had hat tricks at the Legion. Checking in from Kelly's in the match between The Rats and Lizzards, Dave Rosendale also had a ton-eighty.

Rules Points Of Emphasis
As many of you know, Kraig (our new Prez), is an analyst. I'm the guy in charge of rules and enforecement of rules. I'm likely to also be called an analyst, but with a different pronunciation on the first "a" in analyst.
Start matches on time. Darts are supposed to start at 7:30. The absolute limit is to start at 7:45. The only reason darts should ever start after 7:30 is for unusual circumstances that force the match to start late. Starting late is never expected on a regular basis. If you know you have to start late, please give the other captain at least 24 hours notice.
Turn in your scoresheets and fees on time. Losing 2 wins doesn't seem to deter some Captains from holding onto the scoresheets and money for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. That messes up the standings and gives the Sec/Treas more work to catch up the late scoresheets.

Memories of The Laid Back
Best dart bar - EVER! I've been to dart bars in Oklahoma City, Omaha, Tulsa, Austin, Nassau and who knows how many places I've forgotten, but The Laid Back was the best ever.

The wedding. Rotten's "history of The Laid Back" and history of his relationship with Juanita was only topped by the music selections. A Hollywood script writer could not have written this. About 6 songs into what was already on the jukebox, most in attendance were already laughing uncontrollably. Then Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day" came on followed by Janis Joplin's "Why, Why, Why". It's the only wedding I've been to where everyone was standing through the entire ceremony and lots of people were standing on chairs.
Rats and Lizzards. You always knew there was a fun time waiting for you when your team was scheduled at The Laid Back on Thursday.
After Air Cap blind draws and steaks. Some of the most fun I've had in darts were the blind draws after the Air Cap. Only the old-timers will remember Chad Sylvan (Air Cap MVP and top 5 nationally) and Rich Baldwin (top 5 in the world for being a jerk). That's what they were when I drew them for partners at The Laid Back. I'm not kidding when I say I carried those guys into money finishes at The Laid Back. They were burned out after the Air Cap and I was a better player in those days.
Buddy. Yep, my former dog is a favorite. Paul Murphy lost his wife, his job, his apartment and had to give his dog away. Buddy's AKC name was "Lord Budweiser Murphy". Buddy was a registered collie and an absolute ringer for "Lassie". Buddy made several trips to The Laid Back with Paul. Then made several more with Robby and me. Getting to know Paul at The Laid Back gave me 14 years of loyal companionship.
Butch Wagner. Butch is probably the guy who told Juanita and Rotten to try to get some dart players to their bar. Butch was the first Wichita darter I ran into at my first out-of-town tournament. He and Linda (Juanita's sister) were major factors in convincing me to go to more out-of-town tournaments.

Final Thursday Individual Standings
Here are the individual standings for the recently completed Thursday league. Standings are listed for ppd avg. W/L % and "Efficiency". Efficiency is a combination of ppd avg and W/L %. Efficiency tends to recognize players who win more matches than they should with the ppd average they have. Look out for the players with high efficiency ratings. They will beat you when you may not expect it. (Minimum: 10 '01 games played for all categories.)

Over-50 darters detting together
February 21, 2007, 7 PM at the Legion.
Get-together for darters 50 or over. Randy Scheltgen is setting this up and he has some great ideas on getting together and throwing darts for competition and fun. Everything is up for discussion. Formats, setup, etc. Be there to give your input and make it a fun night for us old farts and tell Randy how you'd like to do it.
One of the things certain to be discussed is possible sponsors for the "league". So far Geritol, AARP and Depends have shown some interest. Depends is looking solid. That would solve the problem of darters who always disappear to the bathroom when they're called to a board.

Air Cap Ramblings
It has been reported that the total costs for the Air Cap are around $11,000 (including payouts). With a breakeven on payouts and entry fees, that leaves $4,500 that is paid by WDA members. It's more if the entries fall short of the payouts. $4,500 works out to about $50 per year for every regular WDA player. That's about $1.25 per league night for every darter.There is generally a good turnout of WDA members for the Friday night blind draws. After that, the participation of WDA members drops significantly. Historically, there is a core group of about 20 WDA players who enter and compete in Air Cap events other than blind draws. There is a smaller group that enters events to support the tournament. That smaller group is generally not competetive in Air Cap events.
The majority of payouts from the Air Cap usually goes to out-of-town darters. This year a significant amount of money paid to local darters will go to darters who do not support the WDA and do not contribute to the money, personnel or resources required to produce the Air Cap. .
There are advantages to bringing out-of-town darters into Wichita. It is interesting to see how the WDA's better players do against the better dart players in the region. For some WDA participants it's an opportunity to get beat by an unfamiliar face. For the group of players who spend the weekend at the hotel, it's almost a mini-vacation and for some it's one heck of a party.

That's about the only real advantages there are for the WDA spending around $4,000 a year to produce the event. That works out to about $200 per WDA member that actually participates in the Air Cap (excluding the blind draws).
At some point the question must be asked: "Is the Air Cap a good use of that many of the WDA's resources"?

Turkey Shoot Packs Legion
Imagine a local darting event with 10 dart boards set up and needing all 10 to play the prelimary round of a blind draw.
That happened at the Turkey Shoot when 52 people showed up for the Seeded Blind Draw.
Around the time the field had been reduced to the round of 8, the food was served. Counting family, friends and darters not playing in the blind draw, there were probably 80 or more people who sat down together to enjoy an outstanding Thanksgiving feast. The diners filled both the Legion Hall and the Bar. Huge thanks to the Legion for providing the space required to allow everybody to sit down and comfortably enjoy a meal together.
In the Seeded Blind Draw, once the 26 teams were whittled down to 4, the players still throwing were Nick M and MarkR vs. Sherry B and Rich P. The other match was Craig (a youth darter) and Kenny C vs. Ron D and Rick L. All the matches went 3 games before Nick and Mark faced off against Ron and Rick in the finals.
Both the finals and the consolation match went all 3 legs. Final results: 1st - Nick and Mark. 2nd - Ron and Rick. 3rd - Craig and Kenny. 4th - Sherry and Rich. It's worth noting that Nick drove 14-1/2 hous and basically pulled an all-nighter to get to this event, as he was out of town the day before. There's an example of dedication and the rewards you can get for that.
There were 40 entries in the Unseeded Blind Draw. The Final 4 came down to Rick L and Danny E vs. Danny S and Jim F. The other match was Ian and Bryan B vs. Steve and Gaylon N.
In the finals Steve and Gaylon beat Danny S and Jim. In the consolation match Rick and Danny E took 3rd. Ian and Bryan took 4th.
Huge thanks to Rich P and Dillon's for the turkeys for the meal. The ladies of the Legion Auxiliary did an outstanding job preparing the food. It was a great weekend to be a darter in Wichita.

Welcome home, Dwayne
Dwayne C returned from Iraq and brought his squad to the Legion for a celebration of their return to the States.
Huge congratulations to Dwayne and his squad for what they did overseas and their coming home. Huge congratulations to the people other than Dwayne who were involved in this celebration. This was one of the best events I have attended in my life.
Savage played like an inspired band. This was one of the best performances I've heard Savage play. It was a special occassion and Savage gave an exceptional and inspired performance.
Shortly after Savage began rocking the house, a Legion Riders color brigade showed up with a special flag they presented to Dwayne's squad. The Legion Riders expressed their thanks and appreciation for what Dwayne and his squad had done for our country. A packed Legion Hall sat in silence. Rick didn't need a microphone for everyone to hear the thanks to Dwayne and his unit.
Dwayne took the stage and gave an emotional and heartfelt thanks to his unit for what they had done for him and what they meant to him. I doubt there would have been a dry eye in the building if Dwayne had gone on another minute, but Dwayne had perfect timing and left the stage to a raucous standing ovation.
The guitar player from Savage followed that with a stirring rendition of Jimi Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner.
After celebrating and honoring the return of our Vets from Iraq it was time to get on with the party.
Savage was on fire. Every Savage performance is great. This one I'd have to call exceptional. Pam S sat in for a set and did some great vocal work. Pam doing "Gloria" is always memorable.
36 people entered the dart tournament. The field included some nationally-ranked darters.
In the finals, Dwayne C and Richard C beat Shelley H and Dale C. In the consolation match for 3rd and 4th the team of Hassler and Gribbon beat Tony and Bubba. Tony is a darter that recently moved to Wichita from KC and is a fairly regular player at the Legion's Friday blind draws.
All in all - an exceptional party. I think the thing that said it best was the look on Dwayne's face and the look on his son's face when Dwayne was playing with his son. That's the kind of thing you just don't ever forget.

An amazing Monday Night finish
Going into the last week of regular play, Sherry's Kids were in first by 1 percentage point. Mind Freaks were 1% point behind and No Pressure was 2% points behind.
Mind Freaks had finished their season. No Pressure and Sherry's Kids had a match to play. Sherry's Kids had a makeup match.
No Pressure needed 10 wins to go ahead of Mind Freaks or 9 wins to tie Mind Freaks. No Pressure went 8-6. Sherry's Kids needed 15 wins over 2 matches to go ahead of Mind Freaks. Sherry's Kids went 6-8 against Rich Pike.
It's down to Sherry's Kids makeup game.. Sherry's Kids winning 9-5 wins the league for Sherry's Kids. 8-6 creates a tie for 1st with Mind Freaks. 7-7 creates a tie for second with No Pressure.

WDA memberships are $7.50
The vote to raise dues to $10 was done at a BoD meeting at Mary's. At that time it was recognized and mentioned that anything affecting membership is under the Bylaws and can't be changed at a BoD meeting.
We got so sidetracked with elections at the General Membership meeting that the dues increase was overlooked.
Dues are $7.50. Cheryl is working on a list of people who have refunds coming. It was suggested that those who had paid $10might be just as interested in contributing $2.50 to the WDA as getting a refund.
Under no circumstances can an anticipated refund be deducted from regular league nightly fees.

Regional Cricket Qualifiers
Regional Cricket Qaulifiers are Oct. 7 for men and ladies at the Legion. Entry fee is $5. Signups at 1. Play starts at 2. I hope I'm right on this. 3 events were discussed with signup times around the same time. You might want to get ot the Legion around 12:30 to be safe.
A second Cricket qualifier for men will be at the Laid Back Oct 14. Doors open at 1:30. Signups start at 1:30. Play begins at 2.
These are excellent events for spectators and chalkers. Some great Cricket matches will be played. There is no better place to watch a great Cricket game than from the scoreboard.
Chalkers and spectators are welcome and appreciated.
A second Cricket qualifier for men will be at the Laid Back Oct 14. Doors open at 1:30. Signups start at 1:30. Play begins at 2.
These are excellent events for spectators and chalkers. Some great Cricket matches will be played. There is no better place to watch a great Cricket game than from the scoreboard.
Chalkers and spectators are welcome and appreciated.
Turkey Shoot date changed
Turkey Shoot has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 18 to Sunday, November 19.
DwayneC is returning from Iraq and has scheduled his coming home party at the Legion for November 18.
Dwayne has some friends returning around the same date and they are included in his event. The WDA would like to encourage all members to welcome our returning soldiers home.

Lizzards vs. Wonders
Last year's #1 team (Danny Scott) has extensive personnel changes. The Wonders beat the Lizzards for 2nd place last season by 1 (one) game. This should have been a great match. It wasn't.
DaleC and JimD were in Telluride for a blues festival. You'd think that would give the advantage to the Wonders. It didn't.
The Lizzards brought in EricC as a sub. Eric had played exactly one game in WDA play. DennisM, subbing as Captain for JimD, graciously allowed EricC to play as a 12.
In a doubles 501, EricC took a 104 out. That was pretty much the writing on the wall. In less than a weekI had outs against me of 93, 110 and 104.
Congrats to the Lizzards for a 10-4 win against a Wonders team that was throwing pretty well and probably raised their ppd averages. There was no denying the Lizzards last Thursday. They were so hot I'm surprised the Laid Back didn't catch on fire.

Joke of the Week
If they really want to make a doggie treat with lots of appeal to your dog, they need to name it, "I Can't Believe It's Not Butt".
Great end-games at the Legion 9-8-06
KennyC threw a 2-dart 93 out against me. (T19 - D18). That's the way to end an '01 game!
Later in the evening that was topped by SylvanS throwing a 2-dart 110-out (T20 - DBull). That was against me too. I think you can tell I didn't win the blind draw.
It gets better. JimmyF drew the numbers for the mystery out. First number he drew was 92. Jimmy turned to Sylvan and said, "I was 1 low on Kenny's - now I'm going to be 1 high on yours". And he did it. Pulled out the 111. We nearly awarded the mystery out pot to Jimmy.

National Youth Playoffs
ShawnaP was an excellent representative of the WDA in Connecticut. The 15 players were randomly divided into 2 pools for preliminary play. Shawna's pool had the better players, so she got to compete against the best players in the nation.
Shawna beat last year's national champion 2-1. Then had matches against this year's winner followed by this year's runner-up. That's a TOUGH lineup to start the competition. After that Shawna won some and lost some.
Not many of us can say we were ever in matches at that level.
Congratulations, Shawna. Top 15 in the Nation. Played basically heads-up against all in her division other than the winner and runner-up. That's like an NFL team losing to the 2 teams in the Super Bowl.
Thank you, Shawna for being the outstanding representative from the WDA we know you were. Thank you for showing that players from Wichita belong in this event and can compete with and win their share of games against the best the nation has to play against.
